Chiemelie Ezeobi with agency reportAs the death toll in the collapsed building of the Synagogue Church of All Nation (SCOAN) continues to rise, South African President, Jacob Zuma, yesterday said 67 South Africans have been confirmed dead in the disaster.Zuma’s disclosure has however, raised questions about the figure of 63 casualties released by the emergency agencies especially by the Nigeria’s National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).He said: “I am greatly saddened to announce that 67 South Africans died and scores of others sustained injuries. This is a particularly a difficult time for South Africa.“Not in the recent history of our country have we had this large number of our people died in one incident outside the country.“Our thoughts are with the families, friends and colleagues who have lost their loved ones in this heart-breaking tragedy.“The whole nation shares the pain of the mothers, fathers, daughters and sons who have lost their loved ones. We are all in grief.“We have directed relevant government departments and entities to act with the utmost urgency to ensure that the presidency facilitate the movement of relevant family members to Nigeria, to identify the bodies.“Government will keep the public informed of developments around this tragedy. We pledge that the government would provide all the necessary support to affected families.”He also sent condolences to the people of Nigeria and all other nations affected by this tragedy, adding that: “I would like to assure all affected families that the government will provide all the necessary support.”Meanwhile, NEMA yesterday said the death toll had increased to 62.
However, THISDAY gathered that those with various degrees of injury were either taken to Igando General Hospital, Lagos State Teaching Hospital or Orthopaedic Hospital Igbobi, while the dead were taken to the morgue of the Isolo General Hospital.

Attempts to access any of the victims at Igbobi and Igando were rebuffed by the medical personnel, while at Isolo, the attendants disclosed that they only had some of the corpses in their care.

Also, rescue operators said rescue work was temporarily halted when the excavation got to the ground level at about 2a.m. and the said survivor walked out unaided and unhurt.

However, what could be described as a miracle happened yesterday when a 45-year-old woman, whose identity was not revealed, walked out of the rubble unaided, 96 hours (four days) after the building collapsed.THISDAY gathered that she was immediately whisked away to an unknown destination by the church workers on ground, thereby denying emergency operators the opportunity to speak with her.

Though, the identity of the woman is still unknown, emergency workers from both federal and state agencies said they were shocked how the woman survived despite being trapped under the rubbles for four days without food.

Her rescue now brings to about 131 persons who have so far been rescued since the incident occurred last Friday, while the death toll was said to have increased to 62 following the recovery of 12 more dead bodies yesterday.

Confirming this, Public Relations Officer of NEMA, South-west Zone, Mr. Ibrahim Farinloye, said the woman was rushed to an undisclosed hospital by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service (LASEMBUS).

He said: “I can confirm to you that a woman of about 45 years old walked out of the rubble on her own around 2a.m. yesterday, while rescue operation was on.
“Aside, 12 more bodies were also recovered between last night and this evening and about 131 persons, including the woman have so far been rescued from the collapsed building.”

He also said the rescue workers were likely to recover more bodies because the operation had gotten to a critical level.

Also, the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), yesterday visited the scene of the collapse and after preliminary inspection said investigations would unravel the true cause of the collapse.

Led by the head of Inspectorate and Compliance, Mr. Bede Obayi, the organisation took samples of some of the materials used for the construction, which would aid them in the investigation.

He said: “The investigations will be comprehensive as the organisation intends to get to the root cause of the collapsed structure. We have come here to see exactly what happened.

“We have also watched the clip of what happened, but beyond that we are here to investigate the remote causes of the collapse, to look at the materials and to ask questions about the engineers and contractors that handled the project.

“You can see us taking samples of some of the various materials used, especially the steel materials. The SON, in 2011, took steps to ensure that all steel products that are manufactured in this country are properly controlled and within the standard specification.

“That we have done and that is why today, we are able to identify all the manufacturers of the steel products used for this construction and that is the first step that can lead to further investigation.

“For now, we cannot say our findings. There are lots of questions to be asked. Structures don’t just collapse like that. Our investigation will not be limited to the materials alone.

“The materials may be right, but the selection and combination maybe wrong. The contractor and engineer who handled the project will have to provide us with vital information.

“For now, it is too early for SON to say what the cause of the collapse is but when we are through, we will brief Nigerians on our findings.”
